Factory Fit

A software factory doesn't remove people. It moves them: out of writing each change, and into writing the work, choosing the checks and signing off on what merges.

So the question is not whether agents can code. It is whether a stream of work can be written down clearly enough, and checked well enough, to run without anyone watching.

The running example

Orient follows a small online shop's issue tracker:

THE SHOP'S OPEN ISSUES
  • Upgrade the date library — a new major version, used across checkout and receipts.
  • Fix the flaky checkout test — people rerun it until it passes.
  • Receipts show the wrong currency symbol — for customers in one country.
  • Make onboarding better — a title, and nothing else.
  • Change how refunds are calculated — it touches money and the refund policy.

You'll end having run a small factory on the shop's queue, with three changes waiting for review, and a go, not yet or no for a booking app's stream of small bug fixes.
